I possess a strong commitment to helping people to achieve as much of their personal potential as possible. I have experienced a varied and diverse working life and people from many different walks of life. Being able to draw from my previous experiences affords me a greater insight into many of the problems clients bring to the counselling or hypnotherapy room. I’ve also worked on a voluntary basis as a Person-Centred Counsellor working with alcohol addiction at EDAS, student issues at Southampton University Counselling Service and grief and loss with Cruse Bereavement Care. My experience also includes supporting individuals with all manner of complex support needs including depression, anxiety, self-esteem, confidence, relationship issues PTSD, lack of confidence, low self-esteem, stress, eating disorders, fears and phobias and also helping clients in changing their self-destructive habits.
Within my practice as a counsellor I work in a person-centred way. The counsellor or psychotherapist in this approach works to understand an individual's experience from their own point of view. The counsellor must positively value the client as a person as a unique being, while aiming to be open and genuine. This is vital to helping an individual feel accepted and better understand their own feelings - essentially helping them to reconnect with their inner values and sense of self-worth. This reconnection with their inner resources enables them to find their own way to move forward in a mutually trusting, safe and honest therapeutic relationship without feeling judged in any way. As a hypnotherapist I trained in the Ericksonian tradition which uses more of what it is called indirect suggestions. Indirect suggestions are much harder to resist because they are often not even recognised as suggestions by the conscious mind, since they usually disguise themselves as stories or metaphors as opposed to the more authoritative or direct style of suggestion. I do however adapt my practice according to the needs and temperament of the client.
I believe in equipping clients with tools such as self-hypnosis and EFT to enable them to continue and maintain the benefits of their sessions both during and after therapy. People come to me with a range of psychological and anxiety related issues that affect their quality of life, and my aim is to positively influence my clients for change and grow.
I have also been a carer for my father who has Parkinson’s disease which requires patience, compassion, resourcefulness, good communication skills, energy, a practical approach and a good sense of humour. During my role as a teacher and mentor I gained much experience and satisfaction working with students with autism and learning difficulties who struggle to move forward to fulfil their potential and gain access to employment, useful life skills and more satisfying and functional relationships.
I practice within the BACP and Hypnotherapy Society comprehensive Codes of Ethics. All clients are treated with the highest respect and treated with equal care, regardless of age, race, creed, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or gender. I provide a confidential, non-judgmental and empathic environment for clients to discuss their concerns so that we may decide together a suitable treatment programme to overcome difficulties and realise a full potential.
